Obituary for Peter Holmes
Peter L. Holmes, 78, of Maple Lane, Town of Ulster, formerly of O'Neil St, Kingston, passed away while in the comforting presence of his family on Friday, May 12, 2017.
He was born in Kingston, NY on February 6th, 1939, a son of the late Arthur W. Holmes and Marie (Kidney) Holmes Boughton.
A veteran of the US Air Force, Peter retired as a firefighter from City of Kingston Fire Dept after twenty three years of service. After retirement, he worked as a daytime bartender for Kingston American Legion Post 150 for seven years, thereafter as part-time bartender until health reasons forced his second retirement.
He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 150, Ancient Order of Hibernians, and honorary member of the White Eagle Benevolent Society. Over the years he enjoyed bowling, golfing and spending time with family and friends.
He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Donna (Riehl) Holmes, a son Peter L. Jr., of Kingston, a daughter Cheryl Sussin (Troy) of Saugerties, seven grandchildren, Scott Holmes, Meaghan Jensen, Leah Hall, Samantha Smith, Zachary, Devin and Morgan Sussin, and five great grandchildren. One sister, Donna Carney (Ronald), five brothers, Robert, Dennis, Vincent (Red), Douglas (Mike), and Jeffrey Boughton, and many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
He is predeceased by two brothers, Arthur "Butch" Holmes and Gregory "Joe" Boughton.
The family will receive friends at the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus, on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 4 pm to 7 pm, followed by a service at 7 pm. Cremation at Wiltwyck Crematory and Inurnment with military honors by Joyce-Schirick VFW Post 1386 Honor Guard at St. Mary's Cemetery will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests indoor plants for loved ones to take home and nurture in memory of Peter.
