Obituary for Robert Harjes
Robert Edward "Bullhead" Harjes, 78, of Cantine Rd, Hurley, owner of the original Hurley Mountain Inn, passed away while in the comforting presence of his family early Sunday morning, July 2, 2017 at HealthAlliance Hospital, Broadway Campus.
Robert was born in Jamaica, NY on June 17th, 1939, a son of the late Henry and Dorothy (Wood) Harjes.
A veteran of the US Navy, Bob was a butcher for the family's store Economy Sales, "The Pink Store", on Lucas Ave. Soon after, he was proprietor of the iconic Hurley Mountain Inn, where he served customers for over 23 years. One of Bullhead's famous sayings during his Hurley Mountain Inn days was: "Impossible to copy, although everyone tries". He was a member of the Hurley Social Club, and Teamsters Local 445.
An officer of The Wittenberg Sportsmen's Club, Bob was an avid hunter, who absolutely loved to cook. He enjoyed socializing and traveling, especially to his home in St. Maarten. As Bob would say: "We've done it all"
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, June Ann (Lange) Harjes, who he married Nov. 12, 1966 at St. Mary's Church, Kingston, one daughter, Kim Harjes of Town of Ulster, one son, Robert Harjes of Pine Bush, two grandsons, Devan Burns of Kingston, and Angelo Terpening of Town of Ulster, two brothers-in-law, Louis Lange, and his wife Maryellen, of Town of Ulster, Frank Lange, and his wife Jeanne, of Glenerie, and two sisters-in-law, Maureen Riozzi, and her husband Daniel, of Glasco, and Jeannette Lange, of Port Ewen. Also surviving his best friend, his twin, Randolph Ricardo and family, of Curacao in the Caribbean. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
The family has entrusted the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus, with Bob's care and cremation service arrangements.
In honoring Bob's wishes, cremation held at Wiltwyck Crematory. Memorial service arrangements will be private at the discretion of his family.
